5kW Solar System Philippines: Cost & What It Powers
Ask three installers for “a quote, kahit ano” and odds are all three come back proposing 5 kWp. It’s the industry’s default answer for a comfortable Metro Manila home — sometimes because it fits, sometimes because it’s the proposal template. Here’s what 5 kWp actually is, so you can tell which reason you’re getting.
The numbers
Nine 580 W panels on roughly 23 m² of roof. Installed grid-tie cost in 2026: ₱275,000–₱375,000. Output: about 540–610 kWh a month, swinging ±15% between the dry season’s long sun and the habagat’s grey weeks. At ₱14.74/kWh, that production is worth up to ₱8,993 a month if you can consume most of it directly.
Whose system is this, really?
A household using 600-ish kWh looks like: two inverter aircons running nightly, a mid-size ref, computers working from home during the day, normal cooking and laundry. In bill terms, ₱7,500–₱10,000 a month.
If that’s you, 5 kWp fits. If your bill is closer to ₱5,000, you’re a 3 kWp household being sold two extra panels’ worth of ₱6/kWh exports. Check yourself against the sizing calculator before nodding at any proposal.
The payback, worked honestly
Take the midpoint: ₱325,000 for ~7,300 kWh a year. At 70% self-consumption:
5,110 kWh × ₱14.74 + 2,190 kWh × ₱6.00 ≈ ₱88,474 a year → payback ≈ 3.7 years
Work-from-home households pushing self-consumption past 85% dip under 3.3 years. A house that’s empty until dinner stretches past 4.5. The payback calculator has a slider for exactly this — move it and watch the break-even year move with it.
Three checks before signing a 5 kWp quote
Make sure net-metering processing and the meter swap are written into the quote (what belongs in one). Measure your roof honestly — 23 m², contiguous, mostly unshaded, not “probably fits.” And read how the proposal values exports: if the ROI slide only works with exports priced at the retail rate, the installer is either careless or hoping you are. Exports pay about ₱6. A proposal that respects that number is a proposal you can trust with the rest of its math.
